Do you ever stop to think about your existence on planet Earth? Of all of the known planets (so far) we’re the only one with blue waters, blue skies, human beings and Taco Bell. How and why did we end up here? And what else exists for us to know of this most fascination orb, hurtling through space. Sure, we know the Earth’s waters and we revel in hiking over its many mountains. Some of us even go spelunking, where we don a hard hat and crawl through crevices to see the most startling things. Our planet is genuinely, truly, mind-boggling amazing.
And, if that’s not enough, let’s kick it up (or should we say down) a notch, stand back and gasp at something even more gob-smacking: Pulpi Geode in Almeria, Spain. The Pulpí Geode, also known as the Giant Geode, is one of the largest crystal caves ever found, and is the largest accessible geode in the world. The geological phenomenon is located in Mina Rica, an abandoned silver mine near Pulpí on the northern Almeria coast. Discovered in 1999 by members of the Mineralogist Group of Madrid, it opened to the public in August 2019. Found in Spain near the town of Pulpí in December 1999, by Javier Garcia-Guinea of the Grupo Mineralogista de Madrid. This geode is one of the largest documented geodes in the world to date.
