Save the Japanese trains!

Like many modern, progressive countries, Japan has its eyes wide open when it comes to the environment and what we need to do to save it. In addition to Japan’s willingness to live in smaller, more sensible dwellings, they are also world leaders when it comes to rail versus auto travel. And, this is not a new thing – they’ve been doing it for decades. But it doesn’t mean that all is well. And it But it doesn’t mean that all rail travel is equal.

Many small railway lines across Japanese countryside carry sizeable losses. But in Chiba Prefecture, Katsunori Takemoto has found a way to keep his business afloat. According to the transport ministry, 91 out of the country’s 95 small railways – services outside urban areas or major regional links – recorded deficits last year.
