The 605

Clean. Neat. Simple.

That’s the result (and perhaps the ethos) of The 605 team’s approach to getting your attention. What is 605 and who are The 605 team? It’s a fairly simple concept to understand, but quite an unusual one to us. You might know that the USA has 50 states, and most of those states contain counties. Some counties are big, some can be very small indeed. And, each county has what’s called an area code, and there can be more than one in each state. The area code is usually assigned to the telephone numbers that are within the county. For example, Area codes 415 and 628 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the city of San Francisco, California. As you’ll surely know,  San Francisco and California are big places. As of 2018, San Francisco had 7.753 million people. The opportunities for confusion are obvious. So, hence the North American Numbering Plan (NANP.)

(While the City of Angels has a population twenty-eight times that of Pasadena,2 the city of Los Angeles is home to six different area codes. (Not to mention many more area codes split from Los Angeles’s original 213 area code, including 949 and 909, both of which also made this list.) Phew. Sit down and have a rest to consume all of this.

You’ll certainly recognize this place: Mount Rushmore. Alfred Hitchcock used it in  North by Northwest.

Now, back to our actual subject. It’s The 605. As you’ll guess, it’s an area code. For South Dakota. The only area code for South Dakota. As of 2021, there were 895,376 living in the state of South Dakota: the entire state. Thus, with our thinking caps on, we’ll soon surmise that getting your state’s name out there needs something snappy and memorable. So, may we present The 605.

There’s no better place to explore America’s frontier heritage and pioneer spirit than in South Dakota, a stunningly scenic state where history, culture and outdoor adventure await. In addition to six National Park Service sites, the South Dakota State Park system features 56 state parks and recreation areas that showcase the state’s broad expanses of hiking trails, prairies, back-country mountains, pristine lakes, vast rivers and lush woods. As you can see, there’s plenty of room to play in South Dakota.
