Some things are the stuff of legend. Many are just that – legends, and nothing more. And legends can be a tenuous and fleeting thing. But these kinds of “unknowns” always intrigue us here at Matouring. The more obscure the better, we say, especially when you’re the curious type, too. We like to feature oddities that you can actually see and touch. Certainly, some can obscure and hazy and can take a level of effort to achieve, but will also be worth the effort.
Here’s a good example. How about the World’s Biggest Man-Made Hole? It’s The Mirny diamond mine in Yakutia, Russia. The Mir mine (Russian: кимберлитовая алмазная трубка «Мир» kimberlitovaya almaznaya trubka “Mir”; English: kimberlite diamond pipe “Peace”), also called the Mirny mine, is an open pit diamond mine located in Mirny, Sakha Republic, in the Siberian region of eastern Russia. The mine is more than 525 meters (1,722 ft) deep (4th in the world), has a diameter of 1,200 m (3,900 ft),[1] and is one of the largest excavated holes in the world.
Open-pit mining began in 1957 and was discontinued in 2001. Since 2009, it has been active as an underground diamond mine. But, there is news that it will be opening again in 2024. Read more about that here.
Why would you want to go? Well, there is no other place like this? Secondly, you’ll leave, absolutely astounded. Also, you may accidentally step on a diamond. And finally, have your friends done this?
